Early Life
Rollin Palermo Tabuena was born on December 3, 1968, in Concepcion, Iloilo Province, Philippines. He is the eldest child of farmer-entrepreneur Rogelio Loredo Tabuena and Liny Chu Palermo-Tabuena, a general merchandise store owner originally from Leyte province, who is of Filipino-Chinese descent.
Rollin’s parents were a simple, hardworking, assertive middle-class couple. They were able to build and operate a small neighborhood variety store, which grew successfully into a general merchandise mart in the town center. It existed for 36 years.
This store business left an indelible mark on Rollin’s young life. It served both as a playground and his first exposure to a life of work and responsibility. At a young age of ten, his mother would take him to their store on Saturdays. He would help in handing the goods to customers and in cashiering. This work of helping regularly at the store continued well into his teenage and college years. His proficiency in business and serving customers has developed significantly over the years, becoming one of his most valuable strengths.
Where money was involved, the topmost value instilled in him and the business skills first taught to him were those that concerned “honesty.” Long before he was taught how money was earned in the store, he was first drilled with the words, “Be honest, my son.”
Rollin was given a strong spiritual foundation by his parents and the pastor of his hometown. His father was a deacon. They never skipped Sunday worship and bible studies.
He was also encouraged to develop his abilities, acquire new skills, and cultivate his talents. He was active in extra-curricular activities in school—cultural dances, singing, declamation, writing, and drama club. He loved music. He joined their church choir. His supportive parents bought him a ukulele when he asked for it. Then a piano. He took piano lessons for ten years, successfully holding recitals in other provinces.
Rollin has many memorable moments with his parents. But there was one that shaped his life. It became a destiny waiting to be lived and his most cherished life goal to achieve.
He was 11 years old and in the 5th grade of elementary school when his father sat him down one evening and said that he wanted him to be the first doctor in the family. That evening never left his mind.
Always an obedient, well-behaved, and diligent child, as Rollin matured and completed his early years in school, all the way through college, when he was about to choose an academic course, he was on a mission—to be the family’s first doctor. Despite the financial challenge of such an education, his parents did everything to put him in the best schools and training institutions.
Education & Training
Rollin Tabuena’s formative years were spent in Concepcion Elementary School from Grades 1 to 4. He transferred to Central Philippine University, Iloilo City, for his Elementary levels 5 and 6 (1975-1981) and High School (1981-1985), where he graduated with honors.
For his pre-medicine course, Rollin pursued a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at Southwestern University, Cebu City, Philippines (1985-1989). He passed the Board Licensure examination for Medical Technologist in 1989. He then pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree at West Visayas State University, Iloilo City, Philippines (1990-1994), where he was later recognized with the Most Outstanding 100 Alumni Award in Science and Technology (2008).
He had his residency training in Iloilo Mission Hospital, Iloilo City, Philippines (January 1, 1997 to December 31, 1999). He took his fellowship training at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC), Department of Pulmonary Diseases, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines (January 1, 2000 – December 31, 2001).
Rollin became a full-pledged Doctor of Medicine when he passed the Physician Licensure Examination in 1994.
A year later, he proceeded to his Post-Graduate Sub-Specialty Research Training at the Kyoto School of Medicine, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan (October 1, 2002 – March 31, 2004), where he was a recipient of the Monbukagakusho Fellowship Grant. He took his intensive sub-specialty of Interventional Bronchoscopy (Transbronchial Needle Aspiration Biopsy) at the Hospital Torrette of Ancona, Italy (October 28, 2004 – January 26, 2005). He accomplished this under the European Respiratory Society Grantee Fellowship Training. Rollin was also the European Respiratory Society Bursary Grantee in the Smoking Cessation Programme in Rhodes, Greece (September 20-22, 2006).

D. Pioneering Scientific Contributions
1. Interventional Bronchoscopy in Iloilo
Dr. Rollin Tabuena, the first interventional bronchoscopist of Iloilo, undertook intensive sub-specialty training in Transbronchial Needle Aspiration Biopsy at the Hospital Torrette of Ancona in Italy in 2004. Since then, over the course of two decades, he has treated and saved numerous patients. He relates three of his noteworthy cases performed at the Iloilo Mission Hospital:
Anecdotal Bronchoscopy Cases
Case 1 — My First Bronchoscopy (October 2, 2005, Iloilo Mission Hospital)
I will never forget my very first bronchoscopy. The patient was a 48-year-old man with mediastinal lymphadenopathy. His attending physician feared it was a mediastinal tumor or malignancy. The man had endured two years of recurrent cough and multiple admissions for pneumonia.
That day, a whole team was assembled—medical residents eager to observe, a pathologist ready for a rapid diagnosis, and an anesthesiologist on standby. The tension was palpable; this was my first procedure at Iloilo Mission Hospital.
When the results came in, the relief was immense: it wasn’t cancer at all, but tuberculosis. The patient was started on anti-TB medications, and within nine months, his lymphadenopathy completely resolved. That case reminded us that not all enlarged lymph nodes spell malignancy—and it gave me confidence that I could handle what lay ahead.
Case 2 — The Push Pin in the Lung (July 10, 2007)- An interesting case worth reporting.
One of my most nerve-racking cases involved a 10-year-old boy, Jesy, an asthmatic child who accidentally swallowed a pushpin while playing. He turned cyanotic, and in panic, his nurse-mother nebulized him instead of rushing him to the hospital, hoping it would pass into the stomach. It didn’t. Instead, the pin lodged in his right middle lobe, causing a persistent hacking cough and difficulty breathing.
When he was finally brought to us, no pediatrician in the locality had ever encountered a case like this, so it fell into my hands. With only limited equipment available, I worked for nearly two hours. I even called a gastroenterologist for assistance. Finally—after countless attempts—we extracted the pushpin. Jesy avoided surgery, and we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was a vivid reminder of how unpredictable emergencies can be, and how teamwork and persistence can save lives.
Case 3 — Mud in the Lungs (June 24, 2008, Typhoon Frank Rescue)- An interesting case.
During the devastation of Typhoon Frank, one patient I’ll never forget was a 39-year-old respiratory therapist who collapsed while rescuing flood victims. While carrying an obese individual, he slipped, aspirated mud, and was brought unconscious to the emergency room with an oxygen saturation of only 85%.
He was treated as a near-drowning case, but he soon developed acute respiratory distress syndrome—a “white lung” on X-ray—and was close to being intubated. I decided to perform a bronchoscopy. With repeated bronchoalveolar lavage, we were able to suction mud out of his lungs. He was then placed on a ventilator, started on antibiotics, and gradually recovered.
That bronchoscopy was literally lifesaving. To this day, I remember the mix of exhaustion and triumph when he finally pulled through.
These three cases remind me why bronchoscopy is not just a diagnostic tool, but at times, a true lifesaver. Each patient, each story, carried lessons that shaped me as a pulmonologist.
2. The TB-LAMP
In 2019, Dr Rollin Tabuena achieved a bold, life-changing feat in pulmonary medicine in Iloilo tertiary hospitals. He introduced the Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Test Kit (TB-LAMP) for the 60-minute diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.
TB-LAMP was first developed in Japan by Eiken Chemical Co., Ltd. in collaboration with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the assay was introduced (or became commercially available) before or around 2016 for the diagnosis of TB in adults.
It was originally designed as a rapid, low-cost, and easy-to-use molecular test for use in resource-limited and peripheral laboratories where access to GeneXpert or culture is difficult.
In the Philippines, including Iloilo City, TB-LAMP was made available under controlled or pilot program settings around 2019, supported by Japanese technology via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
In 2019, Dr. Tabuena initiated a research study, entitled “Accuracy of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Test Kit (TB-LAMP) in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in a Tertiary Hospital in Iloilo City,” aimed to assess TB-LAMP’s performance (sensitivity, specificity) relative to other diagnostic standards (microscopy, culture, GeneXpert).
The research study, conducted over a three-year period (January 1, 2019 - December 31, 2021) at Iloilo Mission Hospital, garnered affirmative results 80%. Dr. Tabuena’s study provided local evidence of TB-LAMP’s diagnostic accuracy and feasibility in a tertiary hospital setting, where it could complement or serve as an alternative to microscopy/ GeneXpert. The study demonstrated that TB-LAMP is not limited to peripheral labs, nor is it merely a replacement for smear microscopy in low-resource settings, but it can also be integrated into tertiary hospitals as part of diagnostic algorithms. It is accurate and feasible in tertiary hospitals, giving clinicians and policy-makers confidence to adopt it more widely.
Before TB-LAMP, the main molecular option was GeneXpert MTB/RIF, which, although highly sensitive, faced practical barriers:
a) GeneXpert testing was only available in government facilities that were closed on weekends, holidays, and at night, delaying diagnosis and treatment. Patients often had to wait several days for results, during which time the TB transmission risk remained high.
b) Microscopy, while available anytime, has low sensitivity, especially in smear-negative and HIV-positive patients.
Due to these limitations, many TB cases risk being missed or delayed, especially among symptomatic patients who cannot access government facilities during off-hours.
TB-LAMP offered a solution because:
a) It is a rapid test (results within 60 minutes).
b) It can be done in local hospital laboratories with minimal training.
c) It does not require expensive, high-maintenance machinery.
d) It allows for the timely initiation of treatment, even outside of standard government lab schedules.
Dr. Tabuena’s research study proved that TB-LAMP could be reliably used in a tertiary hospital setting for the diagnosis of adult TB, bridging the gap between speed, accessibility, and diagnostic accuracy. This helped open the way for TB-LAMP’s wider use in the region.
Advocacy
A. Dance Fitness – “Dancing Doctors of Iloilo”
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of 2020, when going out and engaging in usual activities were limited, Dr. Rollin Tabuena, along with his wife, Dr. Daisy Tabuena, formed the Dancing Doctors of Iloilo. They incorporated Zumba into their home cardio exercises. They videotaped their choreographed numbers and shared them on social media, allowing others to follow along and dance with them.
Along with proper nutrition and adequate rest, Zumba is a healthy and enjoyable way to stay fit. Aside from cardio and joint stretches, it also exercises the memory, as the steps should be remembered, and the motor skills, as we should coordinate the movements along with the beats of the music.
The Dancing Doctors of Iloilo has become both a program and a personality duo in the region. Rollin and Daisy collaborate with local artists and Zumba enthusiasts to organize dance-themed events and Zumba contests. These events educate and entertain the public about how to enhance physical immunity, endurance, and strength, as well as the importance of early detection and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Rollin and Daisy also utilize their social media platforms to share engaging content, including dance challenges and health tips, to reach a broader audience and encourage proactive health measures.
Their Zumba content on social media gained them some public influence outside their medical profession. Rollin received invitations to judge in dance competitions and beauty pageants, and also to perform at national conventions. These experiences gave him an added purpose in life. Thus, he plans to expand the program by adding ballroom dances in the routine, organizing more events in the region and nearby provinces, conducting masterclasses and community challenges to engage participants, and partnering with nutritionists and health coaches to adopt a holistic fitness approach.
B. Public Health Education
Dr. Rollin Tabuena is an active participant in health campaigns and medical missions initiated by the government, civic organizations, and professional organizations to which he belongs. A list of his works can be found in the Community Service section of this page. He is a frequent resource person and guest speaker for pulmonary healthcare. He also produces health advice videos, which he posts on his social media channels. Recently, he has frequently supported the projects of the Philippine Cancer Society.
C. Hablon Indigenous Textile
Dr. Rollin Tabuena is a patron and staunch supporter of local artisans, but most especially the weavers and fashion designers of Hablon in Iloilo. Hablon is Iloilo’s traditional handwoven textile made with a handloom using natural fibers such as cotton, abaca (Manila hemp from banana plan, piña (pineapple fiber), and jusi (silk with plant fiber). The term hablon comes from the Hiligaynon dialect word habol, meaning “to weave,” which refers to both the process of weaving and the woven fabric itself. Ever since Rollin was introduced to one of Iloilo’s pride, world-class fashion designer Nono Palmos, he has become a crusader for this indigenous material and the creations made from it. Palmos is hailed as the father of Hablon. Rollin joined Hablon fashion shows for a cause (GWAPO/GWAPA, Hymns of the Loom, Best Dressed Men and Women, among others) and supported the projects of Hablon weavers, particularly in Miag-ao, Iloilo. On many occasions, he would wear Hablon suits designed and made by Palmos. Rollin also has a wardrobe of Hablon-made casuals and stylish, avant-garde pieces.

Early Life
Rollin Palermo Tabuena was born on December 3, 1968, in Concepcion, Iloilo Province, Philippines.

The research study, conducted over a three-year period (January 1, 2019 - December 31, 2021) at Iloilo Mission Hospital, garnered affirmative results ____%.
